Hap Ki Do translates as Method or Way (DO) of the coordination of Harmony (HAP) and mental Energy or spirit (KI); or, "The Way of Coordinated Power".
Hapkido is a separate and stand alone curriculum with its own unique principles and techniques. It does not need to be a part of any other martial art.
Hapkido is considered a "softer art" in that it employs the redirection of an attacker's energy, diverts that energy to the advantage of the defender, and utilizes falling, parries, strikes, and kicking techniques for self-protection. Very little strength is required and it is a superb martial art for both women and men.
